Boris Johnson will commit the UK to a dramatic reduction in carbon emissions over the next 14 years at a summit hosted by President Biden later this week.

As the prime minister seeks to flaunt his green credentials the Cop26 climate conference in Glasgow later this year, he will promise tomorrow to cut emissions by 78 per cent by 2035 compared with their 1990 levels.

The new goal is to be unveiled before a video-link summit being hosted by the US government on Thursday to mark Earth Day.

Late last year Johnson announced a target of a 68 per cent cut by 2030. The UK has already reduced its emissions by 45 per cent since 1990, and wants to hit net-zero emissions by 2050.
