The Hudson Foundation: Empowering Communities and Shaping Futures

The Hudson Foundation, founded by David and Lesley Jackson, is dedicated to creating opportunities and supporting communities, particularly in Bridlington, East Yorkshire.

Launched in 2024, the foundation represents a significant step in consolidating Hudson Contract's philanthropic activities, focusing on social mobility and community support.

Seaside towns like Bridlington have some of the most beautiful beaches in Britain. They are home to talented young people who have so much to offer. But they also have their fair share of challenges with low incomes, high unemployment, poor health and low educational outcomes.

Bridlington-based Hudson Contract is a leading provider of business services to the construction industry, helping SMEs comply with tax and employment legislation. The company's deep understanding of the construction sector and its commitment to supporting self-employed tradespeople have positioned it as a leader in advocating for the rights and recognition of this vital workforce.

At the heart of the foundation's mission is a commitment to helping young people gain valuable trade skills, build self-confidence, and secure a strong start in life. This initiative includes a flagship sponsorship scheme where the Hudson Foundation covers half the wages of apprentices during their first year of training. To date, 260 apprentices have benefited from this support, reflecting the foundation's dedication to nurturing the next generation of skilled professionals. David Jackson, who served as an apprentice before becoming a successful entrepreneur, understands the transformative impact of such opportunities.

The foundation's impact extends beyond trade skills. By sponsoring youth development officers at Bridlington Rugby Union FC, the Hudson Foundation has significantly increased youth membership, fostering essential values such as teamwork, respect, and discipline among young athletes. This initiative has expanded membership from 10 to over 200, demonstrating the positive influence of sports in young people's lives.

In addition to sports, the Hudson Foundation enriches the cultural life of young people by supporting Remarkable Arts, a charity dedicated to bringing the joy of music, especially to those with special educational needs. The foundation's sponsorship enables live events, sign language lessons, and access to music-making resources, ensuring that music's transformative power reaches all corners of the community.

The foundation also plays a crucial role in amplifying the impact of individual fundraising efforts within the community. By providing financial support to causes close to the hearts of Hudson Contract's employees and customers, the foundation recognises and supports their initiatives, fostering a culture of giving and community involvement.

Furthermore, the Hudson Foundation commissions academic research to highlight the essential role of self-employed tradespeople in the construction industry. This advocacy ensures that the contributions of these individuals are fully recognised and valued by policy makers and industry leaders.

In times of crisis, such as workplace injuries or fatalities, the foundation provides financial aid to affected families, offering crucial support during difficult times. This aspect of their work underscores the foundation's holistic approach to community support, addressing immediate needs while also focusing on long-term development.

David and Lesley Jackson's commitment to their community is rooted in their own experiences growing up in Bridlington, where the traditional industries of fishing and tourism are in long-term decline. David Jackson added:

"We can see first-hand the need to support young people in getting a good start to their lives, families in times of need, and the community in places like Bridlington. We can promise people more help through the Hudson Foundation."

Rt Hon Justine Greening, former Secretary of State for Education and Chair of the Purpose Coalition – an initiative that unites businesses like Hudson Contract, organisations, and leaders to address social and economic challenges, added:

"The Hudson Foundation plays a crucial role in offering young people the opportunities they deserve, regardless of their background. By supporting apprenticeships and community initiatives, the foundation not only empowers individuals to succeed but also fortifies the wider community.

“Such grassroots support is vital for promoting equality and achieving true social mobility in the UK. The Hudson Foundation stands as a testament to the positive impact businesses can have on their communities and beyond.”
